TERMCAT's mission includes the task of standardising neologisms from the speciality lexicon. The Centre approaches this work in two ways:

• – By approving the Catalan forms of new terms that emerge in the fields of science, technology and the humanities, whether because no proposed form already exists or because forms are being circulated that are inappropriate from the linguistic or terminology point of view.


• – By establishing linguistic and terminological criteria to facilitate terminology work and the development of specialist languages in Catalan.

The body responsible for this work is the TERMCAT Supervisory Council.

The resources available to those interested in sending us proposals for new terminology to be standardised are the "standardisation dossier" or and the corresponding guide for drawing up proposals (Recerca terminològica: El dossier de normalització). Anyone who feels that a term already standardised should be reconsidered can also use the Dossier de normalització. to inform us.

All terms standardised by the Advisory Council are included in the Neoloteca and can also be consulted by using Cercaterm.

Amongst the commitments undertaken by TERMCAT is that of providing Catalan society with terminological resources in the fields of science, technology and the humanities.

To achieve this goal, TERMCAT produces terminology dictionaries and other compilations that bring together terminology from different specialist fields, as well as advising individuals and teams engaged in such work.

On request, TERMCAT provides users with terminology, methodological and documentary advisory services. These services form part of a line of action aimed at promoting the use of Catalan terminology in all specialist fields.

Through its Consultation and Documentation services, TERMCAT resolves doubts about terminology in the fields of science, technology and the humanities, and also attends to requests for advice regarding bibliographies and documentation from institutions, centres of education, the media, business, experts and professionals.

TERMCAT also provides advisory services for creating terminology products, drafting or translating specialised texts and locating data-processing products in Catalan.

A collection of works, entitled En Primer Terme, published jointly with Eumo, is another channel used to disseminate the criteria and work methodology that TERMCAT has developed.

The objective of the En Primer Terme Collection is to complement the specialised dictionaries by making available to Catalan society other documents that TERMCAT produces in pursuit of its mission as a terminology reference centre.

The Criteris i Mètodes series brings together documents approved by the TERMCAT Supervisory Council or drawn up by research teams at the centre to describe methodological or other aspects linked to the criteria that underlie terminological activities.

In accordance with the cooperation agreement signed in 2005 with AENOR, the Spanish Association for Standardisation and Certification, TERMCAT is the authorised centre for translating the UNE standards into Catalan.

The procedure employed in translating these standards has obtained the AENOR quality management systems ISO 9001 certification and follows the guidelines laid down in the ISO:UNE 15.038 standard for translation services.
