Glossari de sabors del món - Presentation

The Glossari de sabors del món (‘Glossary of Flavours of the World’) is a collection of 106 terms relating to food products (vegetables, fruits, drinks and breads) as well as gastronomic preparations (appetizers, dishes based on meat or fish, seasonings, sweet entertainments and desserts) from all over the world: products and productions of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indian, Armenian, Turkish cuisines, cookery from all the Middle East, the Near East, the Maghreb, West Africa and Central and South America.

The origin of the glossary are the terms elaborated over the different editions of the fair Sabors del món (‘Flavours of the World’), performed since 2012, which offers the possibility to know the food products and the culinary productions of the different cultures that live together in the Fondo neighbourhood in Santa Coloma de Gramenet. The objectives of this fair are to promote local trade, social cohesion and the use of Catalan as a common language.

Sabors del món was organized by the Association of Traders and Professionals of Fondo Neighbourhood, and since 2017, by the Trade and Industry organization of Santa Coloma de Gramenet. From the beginning, it had the cooperation of the CNL L’Heura, the City council of Santa Coloma de Gramenet and the University of Barcelona.

Beyond the fair it derives from, the Glossari de sabors del món continues to enlarge by incorporating new terms, as this compilation is conceived as an open project. Every entry contains the designation in Catalan, equivalents mainly in Spanish, French and English, subject area, a definition and, frequently, notes.

Part of the terms included in the Glossari de sabors del món are standarized; this means, they have been approved by the Supervisory Board of the TERMCAT, which is the responsible agency for the standarization of the Catalan terminology. These terms are mainly names of plant products: common plantainAfrican cucumbercelery cabbageasparagus lettucefonio, etc.

Clicking on "Consulta de termes" ('Term search'), terms can be looked up in three different ways: using the alphabetical indexes (there is a different index for each language), using the thematic access or making simple or advanced searches in the upper space "Text de la consulta" ('Text search') in any of the dictionary languages.
