Petit diccionari de ciència (“My first Dictionary of Science”) is a trilingual dictionary of science for children from 5 – 8 years of age. Children aged from 5 to 8 took part in the elaboration of the dictionary. It gathers 120 terms: each terminological entry contains the denomination in Catalan, its equivalents in Spanish and English, definitions in each of these languages and a selection of drawings made by these children.
This is a multilingual online dictionary based on the monolingual collective work of the same title printed in 2012. Students of primary schools Annexa Joan-Puigbert, in Girona, and Sant Nicolau, in Sabadell, took part in this project (2009-2012). They became lexicographers and drew and explained the meaning of the terms. These terms were later reviewed by language and science experts, who wrote the definitions according to the children’s work.
Clicking on "Consulta de termes" (‘Term search’), terms can be looked up in two ways: using the alphabetical indexes (in Catalan, Spanish or English), or making simple or advanced searches in the upper space "Text de la consulta" (‘Text search’) in any of the dictionary languages. An introduction for the children is provided, together with complementary activities in these languages. This dictionary is part of a broader project, Playing to define the sciences.
