Terminologia del ioga - Presentation

Yoga is a millennial discipline that was born in India. Currently, the knowledge and practice of yoga have been widely disseminated both here and in many countries around the world. Consequently, the terminology used in this field has also spread rapidly and has taken on a popularising nature that in many cases has generated doubts and inaccuracies when it comes to establishing the right forms to refer to the different concepts of the discipline.

For this reason, TERMCAT has considered it necessary to elaborate a terminological collection of the most common terms used by yoga practitioners to determine the appropriate form for each term, with linguistic, terminological and usage criteria validated by the TERMCAT Supervisory Council.

The Supervisory Council has established useful general criteria to establish the Catalan designations. The reference and source language of most terms was Sanskrit. For this reason, first we have established the transliteration criteria and after that, the criteria for the transcription and the adaptation into Catalan, being rigorous and as faithful as possible to the source language. These criteria are also intended to provide arguments that may serve as a guideline for the transcription into Catalan of terms of Sanskrit origin that belong to other areas.

The dictionary includes a hundred words classified in different subject fields: general concepts, types of yoga, asanas, chakras, pranayamas, nadis, bandhas, kriyas and mudras. The dictionary also contains images of the best known or habitual asanas or postures. These images are also portrayed in a poster. Images have been created from photos courtesy of Jordi Morel, scientist adviser of the dictionary.

Each terminological record contains the designation and definition in Catalan, the equivalents in Spanish, English and Sanskrit with the transliterated form, and, in some cases, some additional information or information about the etymology of the terms.

Clicking on "Consulta de termes" ('Term search'), terms can be looked up in three ways: using the alphabetical indexes (there is a different index for each language), using the thematic index, or making simple or advanced searches in the upper space "Text de la consulta" ('Text search') in any of the dictionary languages.
