The online dictionary Noms de papallones (‘Butterfly names’) gathers 269 entries of butterfly species (rhopalocerans) found on the Iberian Peninsula, the Canary Islands, and North Africa, classified into 6 families and 91 genera. Of these species, 214 are found in Catalan-speaking regions. The 2025 extension of this dictionary is the result of the work carried out by experts who are preparing a future atlas and red list of butterfly species in Spain, which will also include the butterfly names in Catalan.
Each article contains the scientific name, the designation or designations in Catalan and the equivalents in Spanish, English and French, including Italian in some cases. A significant number of the entries provides illustrations, which have been elaborated by Martí Franch on the occasion of the collection of posters Papallones de Catalunya (‘Catalonian Butterflies’).
This dictionary, which mainly gathers newly created Catalan designations for species that did not previously have common names, aims primarily to establish the terminology in the field of lepidopterology as well as to promote interest and knowledge of this discipline among the public.
The project began with a proposal of common designations for butterfly species, developed by a committee of experts from the Granollers Museum of Natural Sciences and the Catalan Society of Lepidoterology. This work led to a process of consensus and standardization of Catalan names, which culminated in the approval of a criterion from the Supervisory Council of TERMCAT in order to establish the common names of butterfly species found in Catalan-speaking regions. These guidelines justify the decisions behind the designations included in the dictionary and aim to serve as a reference for the creation of common names for other butterfly species worldwide as well.
Clicking on "Consulta de termes" ('Term search'), terms can be looked up in three ways: using the alphabetical indexes (there is a different index for each language), using the thematic access or making simple or advanced searches in the upper space "Text de la consulta" ('Text search') in any of the dictionary languages.
