Introduction
The Consortium of the Centre for Terminology TERMCAT is the official body in charge of Catalan language terminology. It was founded in 1985 by the Government of Catalonia and the Institut d'Estudis Catalans.
With the ultimate goal of ensuring that Catalan terminology is available in all fields of knowledge and activity and to encourage its proper use, our mission is to coordinate terminology studies for the Catalan language, providing quality services, creating terminology products and standardizing new terms.
TERMCAT is governed by a Steering Committee, made up of representatives from its parent bodies. Terminology standardization – i.e. the process of settling upon forms for new terms needed for the development of knowledge in specialist fields – is conducted by the Supervisory Council, which is a collegiate body. The Institut d'Estudis Catalans has several permanent membership positions on the Supervisory Council and its Philology Section provides the Council's president; the reason for this is to ensure the standardization processes are in line with wider efforts towards the upkeep of the Catalan language.
Over time TERMCAT has forged a strong reputation on the international stage, participating regularly and actively in multilingual terminology networks.
