Diccionari de física

The Diccionari de física (‘Physics Dictionary’), jointly developed by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Enciclopèdia Catalana and TERMCAT, gathers and defines more than 3,000 terms from the field of physics. It is part of the collection Ciència i Tecnologia (‘Science and Technology’), which gathers scientific and technical dictionaries. This dictionary has been produced in collaboration with Catalunya-La Pedrera Foundation and Torrens-Ibern Foundation.

It includes terms from the following fields: mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, optics, relativity theory, quantum physics, particle physics, nuclear physics, atomic physics and condensed matter physics. It also gathers terms belonging to other two thematic blocks: Earth and space physics and medical physics. The starting point for the nomenclature of the dictionary has been the database of the Gran enciclopèdia catalana. Other terms necessary for the understanding of the defined concepts have been added, while the most general terms have been removed.

Each article contains the following information: the main Catalan denomination with its lexical category; synonymous Catalan names, where appropriate, also with their lexical category and relationship with the main term (synonym, complementary synonym or acronym); equivalents in Spanish; equivalents in French; equivalents in English; symbols, if applicable; the thematic area or areas of the term; a definition and, if necessary, one or several notes.

Clicking on "Consulta de termes" (‘Term search’), terms can be looked up in three ways: using the alphabetical indexes (there is a different index for each language), using the thematic access or making simple or advanced searches in the upper space "Text de la consulta" (‘Text search’) in any of the dictionary languages.

This work aims to be a reference tool for a very broad audience: journalists, students, science communicators, translators and proofreaders.

We encourage readers to let us know all those suggestions which may help us improve and expand the Diccionari de física. These proposals can be delivered through the Bústia de suggeriments (‘Suggestion box’), which can be found to the right of the search results.
