The Terminologia del càncer contains over 270 basic terms related to cancer and oncological research, thematically classified into the following subfields: diagnosis and early detection, risk factors and prevention, histology, clinical manifestations, patients and person-centered care, and treatments and research, along with a section on general concepts.
The work was first published in 2018 for the TV programme La Marató de TV3. Coinciding with the 2025 edition of La Marató de 3Cat, also dedicated to cancer, a second edition has now been released to update its content in line with biomedical advances and the needs of affected individuals. With this publication, TERMCAT adds its support to the initiative, continuing to contribute, through terminology, to raising the visibility and public recognition of a disease that poses major research challenges and has a profound human and social impact.
Specifically, this second edition presents new terms and revises the existing ones to reflect advances in diagnosis (liquid biopsy, molecular diagnosis of cancer) and treatments (precision oncology, targeted therapy). Terminology related to key factors such as early detection (predictive biomarker, screening), prevention (social determinant of health, preventive vaccine), person-centered care (second opinion, patient’s experience) and biomedical research (study protocol, translational research) has also been included.
TERMCAT has developed this terminological product with the support of the Ministry of Health of the Government of Catalonia and with the collaboration of experts belonging to Catalan Institute of Oncology and Societat Catalana del Diccionari Enciclopèdic de Medicina, and also in coordination with linguists of ésAdir, the language portal of the Corporació Catalana de Mitjans Audiovisuals - 3Cat, and with Fundació La Marató de TV3.
Each entry in this dictionary includes one or more Catalan designations, equivalents in Spanish, French, and English, a definition, and, where applicable, explanatory notes that provide additional information about the term.
The dictionary aims to be a practical reference tool for all professionals who need to use basic terms related to cancer, both in outreach and academic contexts. We encourage you to use and share it, and to send us any suggestions for improvement or updates.
Clicking on "Consulta de termes" (‘Term search’), terms can be looked up in three ways: using the alphabetical indexes (there is a different index for each language), using the thematic access or making simple or advanced searches in the upper space "Text de la consulta" (‘Text search’) in any of the dictionary languages.
