This dictionary is the result of a collaboration between the Vives Network of Universities and the TERMCAT Centre for Terminology. It offers an online version of a project undertaken by the Vives Network of Universities Language Committee through the Terminology and Nomenclature Working Group, which comprises specialists from each of the Network’s 16 university language services.
This work emerged from the translation into English of terms and concepts with no clear-cut equivalents which appeared in university regulations and other institutional texts. Each university had previously established its own particular solutions; and so it was thought necessary to agree on and publish a set of common translations for all the Vives Network universities.
So began the production of a university administrative nomenclature, shared among the universities joining the project. Subsequently, further terms were added which – while not in themselves problematic as far as their translation was concerned – helped to round it out.
First published in June 2017, it brought together 403 terms in Catalan with equivalences in English and Spanish, as well as accompanying notes where necessary. Since then, each edition has added terms from other thematic areas (electronic office; doctoral studies; research; language policy; and legislation and regulations).
The latest and seventh edition has translated 415 terms into Occitan (often alongside a version in the Aranese variety of this language). It has also introduced 95 new entries, mostly in the area of personnel, while updating 31 more, chiefly with information proceeding from Spain’s Organic Law on the University System, enacted in March 2023). In all, a total of 993 entries.
The full entry for each can be consulted in three different ways: through the alphabetical indexes for each language; using thematic view to list terms by topic (‘Òrgans de govern / Governing bodies’, for example); or by basic or advanced searches in the search bar, in any of the languages available.
