Terminologia dels instruments musicals (‘Terminology of the musical instruments’) is a dictionary that intends to gather terminology related to music instruments, particularly their names and the names of their components.
It includes primarily 387 terms classified by theme within the five main categories in which music instruments are divided – idiophones, membranophones, chordophones, aerophones and electrophones – as well as a Catalan traditional instruments section. Each entry displays the Catalan denomination of the instrument, an identifying image, Spanish, English and French equivalents, and also German and Italian in some cases. This term selection is part of the Viccionari (‘Wictionary’) project, driven by the Catalan association Amical Wikimedia.
Besides, as a result of a collaboration with The Auditorium Museum of Music, the Superior School of Music of Catalonia and Casa Parramon, the dictionary contains terms corresponding to the parts of some representative instruments from each category, added in the 2023 online dictionary update. Currently, it contains the names of the parts of the clarinet, the guitar, saxo, violin and violoncello with the bowl, the piano and drums (also included in seven multimedia infographics that depict them).
Clicking on "Consulta de termes" (‘Term search’), terms can be looked up in three ways: using the alphabetical indexes (there is a different index for each language), using the thematic access or making simple or advanced searches in the upper space "Text de la consulta" (‘Text search’) in any of the dictionary languages.
