Diccionari dels eclipsis

The publication of the Diccionari dels eclipsis, prepared by TERMCAT in collaboration with the Parc Astronòmic Muntanyes de Prades, is part of the context of the total solar eclipse that will take place in August 2026, an exceptional astronomical phenomenon that has sparked great social and scientific interest. On this event, the dictionary aims to provide precise and up-to-date Catalan terminology related to the observation and study of eclipses, and to offer rigorous outreach tools for professionals, the media, and the public interested in astronomy.

In this context, the Diccionari dels eclipsis contains 63 relevant terms grouped into eight thematic areas: general concepts; orbital geometry; types of eclipses; eclipse shadows and zones; phases of an eclipse; layers of the Sun and observable phenomena; observation and safety; and cycles and predictions.

Each terminological entry includes one main Catalan denomination and, if any, synonymic Catalan denominations; the equivalents in Spanish, French, and English; the definition of the term, and, when necessary, some additional explanatory notes.

Clicking on “Consulta de termes” (‘Term search’), terms can be looked up in three ways: using the alphabetical indexes (there is a different index for each language), using the thematic access or making simple or advanced searches in the upper space "Text de la consulta" (‘Text search’) in any of the dictionary languages. 

This dictionary is an open product that can be expanded with new proposals submitted by experts or individuals interested in this field. If you would like to send us a suggestion, you can do so via the email address informacio@termcat.cat.
