The Diccionari de sociologia i ciències socials (‘Dictionary of Sociology and Social Sciences’) contains 2181 terms of Sociology and Social Sciences. This dictionary has a wide scope that covers fields such as sociological perspective; modernization and globalization; economic and political structure; social classes, groups and categories; socialization; institutionalization; family; education; work; leisure and consumption; culture and identity; religion; social media, conflict, inequality and social exclusion; gender inequality and sexuality, life and health cycles; social policies and welfare state, and methodology of sociological research.
In 2019, TERMCAT released a first partial version of the dictionary, which had a few subject areas and about 1,200 terms. Every year since then, an update has been made to add subject areas until the final publication that we are currently presenting. The partial publication of the data during the revision has aimed to acknowledge and thank the cooperation of the large group of experts who carried out the conceptual review of the terminology, referred to in the attached document Work Team.
The Diccionari de sociologia (‘Dictionary of Sociology’) published in 1992 by Fundació Barcelona and TERMCAT, which contained 400 terms, was the baseline for the elaboration of this dictionary.
Every term includes its designations in Catalan, subject label, definition, equivalents in Spanish, English, in many cases also in French and, if deemed necessary, additional notes to expand the information of the definition, cross-reference other terms to help laying out the concept, provide information about the usage or the origin of the terms, etc.
By the online publication, we want to grant access to terminology to all its potential users, experts in sociology or social sciences, students, linguistic mediators, and all kinds of readers interested in this field. We encourage you to use the terminology, spread it amongst potentially interested groups and let us know your suggestions for improvements or updates.
Clicking on "Consulta de termes" (‘Term search’), terms can be looked up in three ways: using the alphabetical indexes (there is a different index for each language), using the thematic access or making simple or advanced searches in the upper space "Text de la consulta" (‘Text search’) in any of the dictionary languages.
