The dictionary Noms de races bovines (‘Names of Bovine Breeds’) is an online reference work comprising 75 entries that records the Catalan denominations of bovine livestock of commercial interest in Catalonia. The names are thematically classified according to the production aptitudes currently established for bovine livestock — milk, meat, or dual-purpose (milk and meat).
The dictionary brings together, on the one hand, 26 newly created entries corresponding to denominations that have been studied and standardised following a request from the Federation of Frisona of Catalonia (FEFRIC), which collaborated with TERMCAT in establishing the Catalan forms, together with specialists from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food of the Government of Catalonia. On the other hand, the work also includes 49 entries drawn from the Diccionari de veterinària i ramaderia (‘Dictionary of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry’), which have been reviewed and updated where necessary.
Each entry provides the Catalan form, the equivalents in Spanish, French and English and, where available, the Interbull international code, proposed by the International Committee for Animal Recording (ICAR, “International Committee for Animal Recording”), which is used for the registration of bovine breeds. In some cases, an additional note provides complementary information on the term.
Furthermore, as a result of a specific request from FEFRIC, TERMCAT has defined a Catalan-language coding system for the bovine breeds of greatest livestock interest in Catalonia, with the aim of enabling the newly created abbreviations to be integrated into a sector-specific farm management application. The abbreviations have been generated from the Catalan denominations and follow the general pattern of the Interbull codes. In the case of Spanish and French, specific abbreviations in use for some breeds have also been identified and included in the corresponding entries.
