The online dictionary Diccionari dels ocells del món (‘Dictionary of the birds of the word’) gathers 5.278 terminological records related to birds from all over the world, classified into 36 orders and 243 families. The thematic classification, headed by a numeric code, follows the systematic order according to the evolutive history of orders and families. The first edition of the dictionary, published in May 2017, presented the terminological records corresponding to all the non-passeriform bird species. This second edition includes a new group of terminological records of bird species belonging to 27 families of the order of the passeriform. It is an ongoing project planned to be expanded while the revision of the passeriform families subject to validation progresses. In the document of the structure of concepts of the dictionary you can look up the families of passeriform birds currently included in the dictionary.

The bird experts involved in this project extracted the terms from the books Illustrated checklist of the birds of the world. Vol.1, Non passerines and Illustrated checklist of the birds of the world. Vol.2, Passerines, by Josep del Hoyo and Nigel J. Collar, published in 2014 and 2016, respectively. This book is an important update of the bird catalogue Handbook of the birds of the world, published by Lynx Edicions between 1992 and 2011.

Each terminological entry contains one or more Catalan common names, equivalents in Spanish, French, English and German, and the scientific name of the species. 325 entries are illustrated, and it is intended that more illustrations will be included in the future.

The online dictionary is complemented by an interactive infographic on the taxonomic classification of non-passerine birds. Each family is illustrated by a representative species linked to the corresponding terminological entry.

Clicking on "Consulta de termes" (‘Term search’), terms can be looked up in three ways: using the alphabetical indexes (there is a different index for each language), using the thematic access or making simple or advanced searches in the upper space "Text de la consulta" (‘Text search’) in any of the dictionary languages.
